It's not about strong views; I love strong views; it's about getting personal, and insulting. I won't accept that such behavior is a necessary part of debate. You can accept it- fine with me, but I do not. And since I do not, I will not support the behavior by encouraging it- and to post to people who pepper their "debates" with such comments is to support it.

It would be so easy if it were just about strong views. But Vandelay has very strong views (I hope you will forgive me for mentioning you, but since it is positive I didn't feel bound not to- however if I offended you in any way by using your name, I will apologize. I've never seen a problem with nice remarks- but that's me.), but he has been very respectful, even when we disagree. It makes disagreeing with him a pleasure and a joy. That is what discussion, good discussion, is for me. I won't tolerate anything less. Why should I? Why accept cold unappealing coffee, when you can have it fresh roasted, hot, and fragrant? I don't see the point. It's simply a matter of taste.

I "refuse to engage in substantive debate"?

Since when? Can you link me to any genuine examples?
