You don't target innocent civilians if you have the capability not to and we do.

No, it's not WWII anymore. But if you had read the books I have read on our Afghanistan campaign, you would understand my viewpoint. We could have killed Osama twice over if it wasn't for our insistance on not hitting anybody else who might possibly be a civilian.

During "Anaconda" we lost eight men and took a lot of wounded because we were afraid of hitting civilians. After taking the losses, we finally did it right. We have taken at least twice the casualties in Iraq that we should have by using troops when we should have blown up places.

I read a LOT of military accounts of events over the last ten years, and I never read one where this problem doesn't come up. We are afraid of the media.

The worst example I have read of this complex was when Carter ordered that we could not fire upon Iranian mobs who might attack during the rescue attempt. We were to use tear gas only. The men who went in intended to ignore this. But he was really serious about it.

Nowadays, the whole Admin and DOD is infected with this attitude.
