Thank you very much for correcting my punctuation and rewriting my post :)). Grammar, punctuation and spelling have never been my strong suits!

Hello Geode00,

I wasn’t really “correcting” anything; I was just splicing two concurrent ideas. I can only survive using the spellchecker in MS Word. Plus, I’m a terrible transcriber:

I wrote “The notion, still widespread today, that we can promote human happiness merely by increasing food production, with a simultaneous reining-in of population growth, is doomed to end in frustration.

This is a terrible gaffe on my part. This should have been “WITHOUT a simultaneous…” The point being that we need to have some method of population control along with our humanitarian food aid.

Perhaps, as with other species, humans are doomed to fail on this planet.

If you have the time (~1 hour), there is a very good lecture by Prof. Diamond covering his book that I mentioned. At the end of the lecture, he suggests that we might feel pessimistic after listening to all the failures that have occurred in history, but we now have the advantage of instant communications. Our technology may save us yet.

Best to you.
