It will not happen. I take it you did not read Hersh's article. He reports several high ranking members of the Joint Chiefs are contemplating resigning because the Bush folk are considering the nuclear option. They clearly know what is going on.I think the emphasis on the nuclear strikes against Iran by Hersh and now by anyone who opposes W is ridiculous. A good way to make partisan points, which no doubt was at least some part of Hersh's intention. Hersh is IMO blowing hot air, as he often does nowadays. As for attacks on Hersh, he's been through it all. It's important to note that he is definitely not a fan of the Bush folk. He's made that quite clear. But his reputation as the preeminent investigative reporter of our time rests on getting it right. Between his sources, his reporting, and David Remnick's editing, it simply doesn't get any better.Everyone with a smidgen of knowledge about how these things work knows that there are contingency plans for practically every eventuality. That the plans exist doesn't mean that nuclear weapons will be used, so relax, we're not going to start using nukes against Iran. Again, these reports of high ranking officers considering resigning over the issues suggests this is far from routine. And, given the Bush administration's mode of doing combat, they are right to worry. The rest of your post depends on a context that simply does not exist, a US administration that could be trusted to convey accurate information to the public. As more and more comes out about the way intelligence was handled during the runup to the Iraq invasion, the Bush folk are less and less likely to be trusted. They've blown it. And we're all the worse for it. Much worse.
