Yep, it took five years of bombing, drafting young men, invading Laos and Cambodia for Nixon to extricate the US from that mess. I know a couple of people who traveled there recently for a bike-riding excursion. They said it was nice.

Vietnam was a civil war as both north and south were vietnamese. Southern governments perceived by citizens as not worth dying for. Communists sucked then but there were able to provide that bowl of rice. The musical chair generals were no match and why we picked up the cause of french colonialism is beyond me although surely we didnt see it that way. Also back then the US Catholic church was a powerful and very conservative lobby and there were plenty of Catholics in South Vietnam who would have suffered greatly under the commies. There's another reason we were involved. In many ways we were there based on wilsonian principles rapped around narrow national interest. Sound familiar. We cannot always impose our will and it took 53k american deaths to prove that point back then. At lease we are not suicidal this time around and are doing everything we can to keep our casualties low. Back then draftes were fodder for the war machine and those of us would be draftees knew that damn well. Unclewest got it all wrong. Just because he was there doesnt mean he is right on the foreign policy and he was a kid back then so i doubt whether he was skilled on military strategy and tactics either. Just too damn easy to blame MSM and liberals for that wars defeat. Sometime defeat is almost inevitable unless the US is willing to up the ante in terms of weapons all the way to nuclear.
