Eisenhower acknowledged that, had elections been held as scheduled in Vietnam in 1956, "Ho Chi Minh would have won 80% of the vote"--and no U.S. president wanted to lose a country to communism.

My BF told me that Ho Chi Minh was instrumental in helping the US during WWII...He said that he'd been a big proponent of the US and our Constitution, wanting to pattern his nation after ours. However, the US betrayed him by allowing French control of VN, which flipped him into the Communist camp.

By and large in 1965, Americans supported the administration's claim that it was fighting to stop communism in Southeast Asia, or people simply shrugged and went about their daily lives, unaware that this gradually escalating war would tear American society apart. It sure did tear this nation apart. Eisenhower had warned that our unwarranted foreign involvement would result in social upheaval and economic turmoil... He was right.
