Oh, I doubt very much that they know the name of the current President of Iran, but if they're old enough they probably remember the Iranian hostage crisis, and think Iranians are dangerous and crazy. As you know, Americans have a low opinion of Middle Easterners, in general, without being able to distinguish one from the other. The Iranians I know call themselves "Persians" -- and after all, Persia is in the Bible, although not necessarily in a positive light.
