I seem to recall James Michener broaching the subject in his "Centennial."

I always thought it was a throwback to Jefferson's command to Meriwether Lewis to take note of any fossils or actual herds of wooly mammoths. They knew such beasts once existed, but did not know whether they were extinct.

Some people think mammoths roamed a lot more recently than commonly thought.

Circus troops toured the west after the Civil War. You might be right.

I'm currently reading Tony Horwitz's "Confederates in the Attic."

I recall a passage from an earlier chapter about "seeing the Elephant." It referred to when a soldier first saw combat.

Unfortunately, I can't locate the passage to quote it.

Excellent book, by the way.
