Wow, another artillery barrage from a respected general: “Lieutenant General Newbold's personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.” This man can not be called a pacifist whiner with a “liberal” agenda. Everyone please focus on this message directed at the Pentagon. “Those are men who know the hard consequences of war but, with few exceptions, acted timidly when their voices urgently needed to be heard. When they knew the plan was flawed, saw intelligence distorted to justify a rationale for war, or witnessed arrogant micromanagement that at times crippled the military's effectiveness, many leaders who wore the uniform chose inaction. A few of the most senior officers actually supported the logic for war. Others were simply intimidated, while still others must have believed that the principle of obedience does not allow for respectful dissent.” !?!? We desperately need to find a way to respectfully dissent – that doesn’t immediately equate to disloyalty. The WH needs to surrender any hint of arrogance that they know best; they need to open themselves to more voices and accept the possibility that the politically weak may have constructive ideas worth listening to. We desperately need to have military officers who speak out for our Constitutional values and the best of our American values.
