We saw some great documentaries at the Full Frame Documentary Festival this week. Here are some that will be well worth watching. Some will be in theatres, some will be available on DVD and at least one will be on PBS:

China Blue: Inside China’s Sweatshops
Shot clandestinely in China, China Blue is a deep-access account of what both China and the international retail companies don't want us to see - how the clothes we buy are actually made. The film follows a teenage girl who leaves her village for a job and descends into sweatshop hell. The crew filmed in China undercover, and had some of their video confiscated. But still a powerful film. Especially educational for folks who buy blue jeans. teddybearfilms.com

Iraq In Fragments: A truly amazing film. Ordinary people in Baghdad, Naseriyah and Kurdish Northern Iraq. Part slice of life, part tone poem. Anyone who watches will have a clear understanding of why the US has gotten itself into such a mess. Filmed sometime after the US invasion, Iraq is now much too dangerous for a film crew to capture these amazing images.

Sir! No Sir! Comprehensive view of members of the military who protested and opposed the Vietnam War. A time trip back to the 60’s and early 70’s. You didn’t see these images on your television screen back then. If anyone wonders why the Pentagon supported ending the draft and going to an “outsourced volunteer army” this will clear it up for you.

Ken Burns: The War
A blockbuster historic documentary from Ken Burns. Covers the lives of ordinary people during WWII. It will be on PBS. Still in production. Maybe his heaviest, most comprehensive documentary yet. Not for flag wavers, neo-cons or dilettantes.
