I would beware of that seasonality myth

It's pretty much a proven thing. I think it was Jules Hirsh (?sp) and then later Sy Harding who examined this phenomenon going back for many decades, and it is quite consistent. Staying invested from October till early May outperformed buy and hold by far. Harding fine tuned the timing of entries and exits by using the MACD.

In 2003 you would miss about 100 SPX points - out of a total of about 230, which is a lot. But then, it is not every year that the index rallies the way it did in 2003.

Another thing about which, I suspect, we may hear a lot in the coming months is the 4 year "Presidential" cycle, which was quite consistent for the past ~100 years. 1998 and 2002 are recent examples of lows.
