The biggest problem with having a centralised or regional control over land use like they do is that it isn't possible for them to know what is the optimal land use as they get more industrial, one that allocates resources efficiently. In a capitalist economy this would be discovered by individuals experiencing losses and gains. Inefficiencies are wrung out by failure. Acting to limit losses may promote social stability but it also makes the economy inflexible and less efficient, this is the problem in all socialist countries. Trial and error are very important tools which socialist governments everywhere try to destroy. If there is one universal tendency it is to prop up and subsidize failure while punishing success!

For sure, the US isn't without this kind of government interference. If I were to discover gold on my land tomorrow, I'd have a hard time obtaining the legal right to mine it. Re-zoning property is sometimes a long painful process in areas where there are "open space" policies. Property rights are not without limitations on use here, sometimes serious and onerous ones.

I think ahhaha is right in that we're going in the wrong direction and China is going in the right direction, in terms of doing away with their socialist policies. Still, China is a long way from having the core concept that still exists in many parts of the US, one that states that your home is your castle and no one has the right to intrude on it.
