If this country was a business, the shareholders would have sold, it would be a penny stock. No company could run on these financials. Well, I just got done watching a show about education put on by Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates. They started the program by showing a state of the art school with all the high tech facilities you could possibly want, an incredible gym, a workout room replete with treadmills and exercise bikes, carpeting in the hallways etc......the school cost $62 million and was built in a Chicago suburb. Then they showed the audience an inner city school that had a leaking roof; had no band equipment; just a few computers for 1500 students; a gym that was not usable etc. The next school they showed was a high school less than a mile from the White House. The boys' bathroom in the gym was completely unusable.......they had boxed in the urinals because a pipe was leaking; there were more roof leaks; pipes in the walls were leaking as well; in places, large pieces of plaster were either decomposing or simply breaking off...........with one roof leak, the work order had been submitted back in 2002 but the repair had never been done. And then they cited some amazing statistics.......back 25 years ago, the US was #1 in math in the world. Last year, the US was ranked 24th in the world. In terms of HS graduation, the bottom five states had only 54-59% of all students graduate. Those states are SC, GA, MISS, NY and NM. The top five states who graduate anywhere from 80-84% of their students are WI, IOWA, NJ, MINN and ND. In one Chicago HS, only 29% of the students graduate. I can't imagine it.......the dropout rate is astounding. And its not just children of color......they showed an all white, very modern school in Shelbyville, Ind.......the dropout rate was higher than 35%. The dropout rate is so high in Indiana that they just passed a law that if you dropout and don't get your GED within 5 years, they can revoke your driver's license.......that's how bad it is. Its amazing to me........if someone dropped out in my high school, it would have been a shocker. Ninty percent of my graduating class went on to college. I had no idea the dropout rate in the country was 30% for all students and 50% for children of color. In conjunction with the Oprah/Bill Gates show, Time magazine has an article in their magazine this week called Dropout Nation. I plan to get a copy. In addition, if you want to know about what Bill Gates is doing, go to www.standup.org. It was an amazing, eye opening program. In my cohort, we have seen films and video clips that told this story in part but not to the magnitude of Oprah's. The second half of the show is on tomorrow. Maybe you can tivo it. ted
