"The transatlantic slave trade cost Africa tens of millions of lives..."

1) Yes. Although that figure includes a large number who weren't destined for the US. Which is the topic of discussion.

2) There is a difference between "cost Africa" and being killed.

3) You are counting ones killed in Africa by Africans as being killed by Southern Americans. The slave trade existed in Africa long before Europeans settled in the Americas and continued long after the practice in the Americas was outlawed. In fact, it continues to this day. The British just took advantage of an existing market.

Bottom line, there were far fewer blacks killed over the 4 centuries of the slave trade by whites than the Jews killed by the Nazis. Then when you consider the Romanish, Catholics, Protestants, ones accused as witches, etc. over Europe's pretty bloody history, the US looks like a bastion of tolerance. Even if you throw in the Indian wars and the not so Civil War, Europe has killed off many more for tiny cultural differences.

Re: And why are the Muslims in France rioting if things are so great for them there.

"Muslims in France" are not seeking redress for over 200 years of racism, segregation and racial terrorism à la KKK.

No, they already did that in Algeria in the 1950s and 1960s prior to their independence after 100 years of French rule.

The current Muslims are attempting to end the discrimination that they have experienced since Metropolitan France was first established and they were given the rights of French citizens.

As we both pointed out, France --and Europe at large-- is going through what the US experienced in the 1960s --civil rights unrest. However, unlike what happened to Dr Martin Luther King, Malcom X and their prominent white fellow travellers --namely, JFK and RFK-- I don't expect that Europe's pro-immigrant leaders will be assassinated by their rightwing opponents...

So far so good......but then, no Frenchman is championing the rights of blacks in quite the same way as the Kennedys did. Having said that, you all are just at the very beginning of the process.
