Most people are highly egocentric and are concerned with their own happiness, so they don't care about total human happiness. So they don't care to contribute to increasing population by having lots of children. That's why birthrates have plummeted to below replacement rate in some countries [with immigration in some keeping populations up].

I expect that process to gather pace as it is only just being culturally adopted as the norm.

$35 a barrel [in 2003$, or gold equivalent] in, oh, about 2011. It took about 6 years from the peak of 1979 to the low of 1986. It takes time for the SUVs to be junked and replaced with 800 cc micro city cars and for alternative fuels to get on stream.
