What is MTBE?

MTBE, Methyl Teriary Butyl Ether, a gasoline additive, has contaminated drinking water supplies throughout the country. MTBE is made from methanol and a by-product of the oil refining process and was added to gasoline in an attempt to make gas burn cleaner in high pollution areas. However, an EPA panel recommended that MTBE be reduced in use as a gasoline additive because of the toxic hazard that it poses to drinking water supplies.
Are You at Risk?
Check your state to find out more about MTBE in your area.

MTBE is classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a possible human carcinogen and its long term effects in humans are unknown. However, one thing is clear; MTBE has destroyed and will continue to destroy the public's natural resources. Because there is no cost effective treatment technology available to remove MTBE from drinking water, MTBE is an ongoing threat to drinking water supplies and causes permanent property damage. You and your family could be at risk.
