(LRCX,Trade), a semiconductor equipment maker, said on Wednesday that quarterly profit rose 45 percent as it gained market share. Net income climbed to $86.3 million, or 60 cents per share, from $59.5 million, or 41 cents per share, in the year-earlier period, Lam said in a statement. Revenue increased to $437.4 million from $349.3 million. New orders rose 29 percent from the preceding quarter to $520 million, the company said. Lam Research is a leader in the niche market for tools that etch and polish microscopically thin layers on silicon wafers used in microchips. Quarterly per-share earnings were 65 cents excluding a $7.4 million expense related to the planned repatriation of as much as $150 million of foreign earnings. Analysts, on average, had expected earnings before items of 62 cents, according to Reuters Estimates. Analysts had expected revenue of $424.7 million. The shares rose 0.7 percent to $45 in extended trade after being little changed in regular trading on Nasdaq.For the quarter ending in June, Lam Research forecast earnings per share of 80 cents to 85 cents and revenue of $490 million to $510 million. Analysts, on average, were forecasting revenue of $468.9 million .
