I've seen strip mines that really torqued me off, and it was difficult for vegetation to get established. The ponded water looked toxic indeed.

I met and talked to an old man whose house was completely surrounded by strip mines. He had refused to move off, and the coal companies just mined around him. It was hideous.

The smelters in Kellogg Idaho killed off the trees for miles. They are coming back now, since the smelters aren't operating any more.

There are Chicken Littles, Big Bad Wolves, liars, and demagogues on both sides of environmentalism.

I'm against them all.

None of them can stand against nature, but you are right. Humans live a few decades; some things take centuries to play out.
