I think it was not marketing, but instead, backward compatibility. That allowed the number of application to grow, and also allowed a proliferation of user-written programs that could run on any generation of the machine. That in turn was magnified as the network effect became the dominant driver of computer purchase.

This effect also explains the success of AMD64 and slow uptake of Itanium.
