Can you offer any thoughts as to why Ahmadinejad would issue such a statement at this particular sensitive time? To me, it seems to be exactly the wrong public stance. In my opinion, Iran would gain time and some trust by being more conciliatory towards Israel & the West.

He knows his remarks are inflammatory, and living next door to Iraq, he has seen the destruction and the power of the US military. Why test the Israeli/American resolve?
