When Reagan was elected, we were going through the worst economy since the Great Depression. With high gas prices, stagflation and an economy that was transitioning from a manufacturing one to a services based one. It wasn't clear what kind of services we would be selling either. Burger-flipper seemed a lot more likely than anything else. People were in a panic over what the future would be like, most figured something bleak. Those were the years of the survivalists who expected society to collapse either through a nuclear war or global depression and they were going to be the ones who came out on top in the chaos. "Soldier of Fortune" magazine also dates from then. Such times give rise to amoral people who are more ends justify the means types.
