The Fear Factor By BOB HERBERT However one feels about Zacarias Moussaoui — that he's a madman with a martyr complex who had very little to do with the Sept. 11 plot, or that he's a terrorist with the blood of thousands on his hands — his sentencing trial and contemptible public behavior have reacquainted us with the awful physical suffering and profound emotional agony unleashed by the Sept. 11 attacks. You know.........its really crazy what's happening. Tonite on the news they announced that the new Chief of Staff may be changing some of the cabinet positions by bringing in new people. When did it become the purview of the Chief of Staff? Meanwhile, generals are retiring so they can speak out against Rumsfeld and what's wrong with Iraq. David Gergen, a political analyst, said tonite, and I believe him, that as far as he knows never in the last hundred years have retired generals been so upset with the Secretary of Defense that they speak out against him. To his knowledge, in addition, there has been no Chief of Staff who has been given authority to pick Cabinet members. Although I never read the book, what little I do know of it......this whole scenario sounds like Alice in Wonderland. And yet people keep doing what they do without batting an eyelash. You asked what I am doing about it........I am doing but I am not sure it makes any difference at all. Its like there is a big white elephant in the room and everyone is making believe it doesn't exist. Bush is the worst president in several lifetimes and he remains in office. Its the stuff of insanity.
