The difference now is this ponzi scheme is easily visible to the masses. Stuff Fastow or Sullivan did behind closed doors or the true supply/demand balance in their respective industries was not available to the general public in real time..

Happens all the time, look at enron and wcom.


The problem is the event and the stocks decouple often. For example look at oil stocks. Everyone knows oil is going up, you can see it all around you but nonetheless, the stocks may or may not go up. These housing stocks are like that which is why I don't short them.
