What you leave out when you bring up that name -- Germany was the second (or third, depending in timing) biggest economy in the world. Germany was the most industrialized country in Europe and in many ways more advanced technologically than the US. Germany had incredibly advanced military technology, far superior to ours, at least in the beginning. The German army started building back their military immediately after WWI, in secret, building passenger planes that could double as military planes, civilian motor vehicles that could be transformed into military vehicles, and paying Swedish and Dutch companies to build submarines and ships. The German military-industrial complex chose the Bavarian, he didn't choose them. They liked his style. Because they were afraid of the Soviets as was the rest of Europe. In fact, the Brits and the French knew the Germans were remobilizing in violation of the Versailles treaty for years but looked the other way because they wanted Germany to act as a check on the Soviets. After the Bavarian came into power he did start mobilizing openly, this was 1936 but they weren't ready to invade Czechoslovakia and Poland until 1939. By that time they had the biggest military in the world. No, just being crazy isn't sufficient to conquer the world. Ask Idi Amin. Iran isn't Germany, and even the Germans never beat us. As for the Bavarian -- I think his insanity level has been overhyped. Definitely hated Jews and looked down on Slavs, but the same could be said of most of Europe.
