Unfortunately, I think you're right on the money with this one, c2. Barnett's attitude towards the mullahs reads to me like the 30's redux: the new leader obviously can't mean what he's saying, it's just to inspire the domestic followers, etc.

And what an easy explanation for the Mullahs that would be: Our tactics have worked, the Americans are afraid. Let's continue doing what has worked--terrorism and our nuclear program. Our goal of destroying Israel is now unimpeded


Exactly. They are going to fight one way or another. Establishing ties and recognizing Iranian dominance in the Gulf would just be tantamount to forfeiting the game, and I think the mullahs would view it as such.
