But you must put your encounters with "La Raza" in context.

You need more context? I'm talking about the interface between the group of that name and public employers/employees pertaining to identity issues. That's the context of my encounters. (I have way too much experience with identity groups. If you'd love being around Cynthia McKinney, you'd love being around La Raza.)

None, I daresay, for there would be no reason to address you as a member of "mi raza."

Hmmmm. And here I thought that you and I were buddies... <g>

But seriously, that's neither here nor there. I'm sure I was quite clear that popular usages of the term were outside the context of my comments. I was talking about the specified interest group.

Hanson is ignorant about Mexican Americans...There are a lot of good cuates in it, and they are being thrown out with the bathwater

What was wrong with his piece other than perhaps making too much of the use of the term, "la raza"? Not that I think he did that because he specifically constrained the context to its usage by "extremists," not "Mexican Americans," in general. Perhaps you were skimming.

I think he was right on in pointing out the sloppiness of the terminology and thinking on this issue and how that's retarding progress. As you know, I'm always keen on thoughtful and apt labeling... <g> If you eliminated the part about "la Raza," would the piece have bothered you so?

The whole "they are illegal, they gotta go" line of reasoning makes me ill.

There are a lot of things about this issue that make me ill, too. The notion of rounding up and tossing out all the illegals is one of them. But that's no harder on the stomach than the refusal to differentiate between illegal and illegal immigrants and calling those who do anti-immigrant, nativist, racist, etc.
