I may be way off with my numbers but why cant fica and medicare be included in flat tax? So lets say 20% of all income above the first 40K. This would add an alternative to progressivity while helping the poor and working middle classes. This would even help with illegal immigration as suddenly low wage jobs would become virtually tax free for americans. Of course we would have to get over what SS was oringally to be and how it was to be financed but i am willing.
I think you oversimplified the state tax stuff but the truth is that i know very little about this. It is just impossible that there could be so few programs and need in florida. Money is coming into state coffers in different ways and that would explain some of the discrepancy. No doubt there is great waste in high tax states but that doesnt explain the whole picture to me.
