The solution is to create respect for the rule of law by making it possible for foreign workers to come here and fill the jobs the economy needs filled. Immigrants will use legal avenues to enter this country if they are open to them--even at a small cost--for the simple reason that it is more profitable to live outside the shadows than inside barrios where hustlers can take advantage of them without fear of the long arm of the law. That means vastly more work visas than the U.S. now issues, and it is why President Bush is pushing for a guest worker program. Once immigrants are allowed to live outside of the shadows, it will be much easier for the nation to assimilate them and then target drug traffickers and others who still sneak across the border. The strongest fence is the economic opportunity of a life out in the open. It's about time this nation started using economic incentives to its advantage.

The people who are advocating that it continues to be all right to effectively have open borders in the US are the very ones who will bring the downfall of the US. IMO. We MUST know who is coming in and out, and why. Otherwise, in the atmosphere of what has happened in the last 15 years worldwide, we are just asking to be hit again, and again. Why bother spending any money to protect us from anyone or anything, if we don't care about open borders....and how many people come in nor who they are, nor what their background or agenda is. ??? And the people who write things like this quote: somehow managed to preside over the destruction....ad nasaum are playing politics as usual. This should NOT be a Dem or Repub issue. It should be an AMERICAN issue....a safety and legal issue. It is NOT about color, race, or any other thing... Our Government is ultimately charged with one thing as a prime duty. To Provide for the Common Defense. And this quote is so "yesterdays politics as usual" n Pete Wilson was governor of California in the 1990s, he somehow managed to preside over the destruction of the state's Republican Party after pushing the passage of a popular initiative to block illegal immigrants from being able to use government services. We are in a whole new world now, and people had better soon realize it...
