Well, I did listen to the Washington demonstration on C-SPAN, and they did keep saying, over and over again, that they were Americans, chanting "U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!" and cheering.

In the border states, where they are a much larger percentage of the population, they are much more radical. Minorities don't try to take over when they are a small part of the population.

You missed the first sentence, starting with Europe! Europe has already been through this "guest worker" policy that we are being urged to follow. They have learned the hard way what it means to have a growing foreign population in their midst -- a population that insists on remaining foreign and hostile to the culture, values and people around them.

Sowell would like to the US avoid what is happening in Holland and France, even as recently as a couple of weeks ago.... More than 1/4 of their population is now from another country....and culture.

It's one thing to have that as a goal (if it is) but another thing to foist it on the population in as little as a decade....We must assimilate slowly.

AND again, we do need to know WHO is coming to our country to stay, or to work as a guest worker....and what their background is....

Otherwise just open the borders, and take our chances, and save us some real money.

Short term of course....In the long run, we will be extremely sorry we were so much like an ostrich that we couldn't see the larger picture.

Maybe this is true somewhere in America, but it's not true any place I've ever been.

It's not true anywhere I've been either, with the possible exception of Miami. But I think that the differentiation make by Sowell that maybe you speed-read past is the between our culture of immigrants and Europe's culture of guest workers. If we set up a program of guest workers, we might well get what Europe got, and that ain't pretty. IMO, better to expand traditional immigration than to intentionally set up a large class of rootless and alienated guest workers.
