I don't think many know that you can get fairly reasonable health care coverage as an individual.

I've implied as much.

Corporate healthcare is a benefit. They are spending your money for you. Fortunately in my former corporate job, the company allowed you to decline coverages and gave you a cash credit. I declined, got individual coverage in the open market and pocketed the difference. It worked for the life insurance too.

You're sophisticated. Most can't do that. It's outside their ken, but only because that's how they've been conditioned. It's hard to break away from the guarantees and security of institutions unless that's common and standard practice, or unless one is a risk taker.

I've been telling people to do this for many years. I've always covered myself. Compensation is always up for negotiation unless the person is in a labor union. Having their own plan gets them away from the other problem, which is that their corporate policies aren't portable except for the small amount of time afforded them by COBRA. I can't tell you just how many people have told me they lost their jobs at age 50-55, at exactly the time when they will need that health insurance. It has cost me far less to insure myself and my husband in an independent plan than it would if that coverage had been provided by an employer and I get to pick the plan that suits my needs and means exactly.

It is unbelievable. People have no clue how cheap health insurance is. They are willing buy all sorts of useless crap, but don't want to spend $100/month($1000 deductible).

My friend had an infected hair that ended up costing him $6000, or what would have been five years of coverage had he chose to insure himself.
