CD, there are secular price adjusted charts for gold and silver pn Nick "sharefin" site.
On the long run, the value of any commodity lowers.
AS more people can afford commodities, that commodity loses in "rarity".

Charles the Great treasure was of silver (in pounds of 300 grams fwiw). Even with today's World stock of silver, he could not have ruled Europe as he did. <g>

For the shorter term, as you say, "inflation" adjusted is highly suspicious as "inflation" is yet another political tool.
