I am not familiar with the Ripon Society. "There are plenty of threads where back and forth dialogue exists--my own threads for example. And regarding those, look what two or three GOPwingers have managed to recently do to that thread: They've turned it into the Duke Univesity Gangrape thread." There are a few posters who are very destructive and unreasonable. For that reason, I can see the point in temporary bans of posters who are unwilling to engage in rational discussion, or who can find nothing better to do than engage in personal attacks. I think it is an abuse of authority, however, to ban persons because of who or what you think they represent. I see no point in threads that simply invite posters to publish an extreme view point and prohibit comment from other perspectives. "And regarding those, look what two or three GOPwingers ... I have not seen Longnshort contribute to any thread discussions in a constructive way, and I have seen his vitriole drive reasonable and decent posters away from threads. There are also a few others from both right and left camps that cause thread discussion to go down hill very fast. I would like to see more threads that are open to rational discussion from all perspectives. "They've turned it into the Duke Univesity Gangrape thread." Duke gang rape is a current event. It will pass and other topics will replace it. Is there something stopping other people from dialoging on whatever topics are of interest. The 'View from the Center' thread seems to come close but I wish Dale would be more tolerant of banter and confrontation.
