PriceSmart April Same-Store Sales Climb 19.9 Percent, Stock Surges to New Year High

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- PriceSmart Inc., which operates warehouse clubs in Central American and the Caribbean, said Friday that same-store sales, or sales in stores open at least a year, rose 19.9 percent in April.

Total sales for the four weeks ended April 30 rose 24.2 percent to $61.4 million from $49.4 million.

For the combined two months of March and April, same-store sales climbed 16.5 percent, while total sales increased 20.9 percent. Comparing the combined two months normalizes any impact resulting from Easter, which occurred in March of 2005 but in April of 2006, PriceSmart said.

The retailer, which operates 23 warehouse clubs in 11 countries and one U.S. territory, also said it agreed to acquire land, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and in Arima, Trinidad. The separate deals are contingent on government approvals.

PriceSmart shares surged $2.32, or 24 percent, to close at $11.91 on the Nasdaq
