Sounds a bit fanciful, some tall tale that the writer overheard and recounted in his newspaper.

I've read a lot about that time, so I have a grasp of what happened. In particular a book about the Warburgs, a German family that had one member emigrate to the US.

Paul Warburg was instrumental in setting up the U.S. central banking system circa 1913.
