2 Dead As Mexican Police, Striking Steel Miners Clash

.

MEXICO CITY (AP)--Police and striking steel miners clashed in central Mexico Thursday as authorities tried to remove workers from a plant they had taken over, leaving at least two dead and more than 30 injured, a government official said.

The confrontation erupted at the Sicartsa steel plant in the port city of Lazaro Cardenas, about 350 kilometers southwest of Mexico City.

Lazaro Cardenas city spokesman Daniel Vargas confirmed there were two deaths and at least 36 miners injured. It was unclear whether the two people who died were workers.

Vargas said the confrontation began when state and federal police arrived at the plant to evict workers who had taken over the facility at the beginning of the month to protest the firing of their national union leader.

The plant is owned by Grupo Villacero. Company officials could not be reached immediately for comment.
