I am watching in complete amazement as the situation in Caledon slowly gets worse. The people facing the most injury are the people the Natives least want to injure, and I fear if the residents of the reserve thought they faced discrimination before, what is coming may be worse. Apparently they have closed off a lifeline, in order to preclude another attack from the OPP. Quite simply the evacuation order should be rescinded so that there is no legal reason for them to be moved. Then perhaps the highway could be opened and those not involved in the stand off could have their lives back.

Neither the provincial nor the federal government looks good here, but all levels of the Canadian Government need to take a fast lesson here. Land claims should not take generations to solve. I remember when the government expropriated my Uncle's farm for the new Welland Canal. It is still a farm, oddly enough, but my Uncle and his family were forced to leave their home, because the government wanted it. I think I was about 15. At 59, I still wonder why they had to steal my uncles land. I can imagine what it was like for those who live on a reservation wondering why they took the land, and why they wouldn't give it back. There was no justice in the theft of Ipperwash, and had the Federal Government done the right thing no one needed to die. Now we have a Conservative Government, and the Indian Affairs Minister is hiding from Canadians. Obviously this has been going on for years, equally obviously he didn't have anything to do with negotiations up until now, but he isn't being part of the solution either. Why hasn't Stephen Harper gone to Caledon and told the natives to open the highway, but other than that sit tight. Why hasn't the Indian Affairs minister asked the Natives to give back the corporate documents of the construction company so that they don't go bankrupt. That is what negotiations are. And the two week timetable advanced by the Federal and provincial Governments is just plain weakness. Start the negotiations between Harper, McGuinty, the various Indian affairs ministers and the representatives of the natives. Stop stalling, and prove you are fit to govern, or find someone who is.
