Re: Kennedy What Kennedy did then has no bearing on what's going on today with Bush and Cheney. Can't you folks stay in tune with what's going on now? There recently was a heavy-drinking Republican governor who drove drunk and killed a guy on a motocycle. Do progessives do to him, hammer away at him like GOPwingers do to Kennedy? Governors win statewide elections so do US senators--they're on a similar level. I think, deep down, the problem is that Republicans believe, encourage and act upon pain politics. And that's the big difference! Whose side are you on?

You just smeared Teddy Kennedy by using the biased opinions of rightwing policemen. It is ridiculous for anyone to claim to know Kopechne lived for two hours in a submerged car. And if she lived, why didn't she escape? I've been to the Chappy bridge many times. The only big mistake Kennedy made was trying to navigate across that tiny bridge in the dark to begin with. Especially if he was drunk. Once the car went into the channel, it would have been next to impossible for Kennedy to rescue the girl because: 1) It's pitch dark, no lights anywhere around 2) Fast current and cold water 3) No houses nearby for him to run for help to. Yes, Kennedy did try to do damage control after he realized she could not be saved. But of course he would have loved to save her. Cheney also did damage control after he shot the guy in the face and could have killed him. He did not report it until the next day and took him to an out of the way hospital where a cover-up could have been engineered. The Kennedy family has their share of scandals, but all minutia compared to how the rightwing murdered their two oldest sons and denied this country two great presidents who would have stopped the Vietnam War. And if not for Chappy, Teddy might have been president. So he was punished. very badly. He wanted to be president and after Chappy could not proceed. And yes, Teddy has done his share of drinking, but Bush-Cheney were both alcoholics for a long time. And alcohol is legal.
