Thanks, that's the kind of detail I was looking for. As far as security issues go, who can say? Beyond having a rifle and a pistol and knowing how to use 'em, I doubt there's much more I'm willing to undertake. As you said, "hope it doesn't come to that"...for sure!

The skills the Amish have can be eventually relearned by the rest of us unenlightened folk, of course. Maybe community colleges or vocational schools will start teaching stuff like blacksmithing, basic vegetable gardening and orchard management etc. (I know gardening is covered in my own community college system, but I'm not too sure how far they get into real nuts and bolts farm management). No substitute for hands on experience, and I like to garden anyway so I think a few acres and a hobby farm should get the ball rolling.
