Letter to the Editor: anti-Semitism is worsening in Switzerland
Jerusalem Post ^ | Feb. 13, 2004 | Veronique Elefant-Yanni

Veronique Elefant-Yanni: I work at the University of Geneva. Two or three years ago, pro-Islamist and pro-Palestinian conferences or exhibitions started to take place quite often in the building. Their common denominator is to be anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli. They always give biased information about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For example they projected the movie "Jenin, Jenin".

Also over the last three years we saw more and more young students carrying Palestinian symbols like flag-stickers on bags or black and white scarves.

Many pictures of tortured bodies accompanied with texts claiming that the tortures were inflicted by Israeli soldiers were exhibited in the big hall of the University's principal building.

Moreover, the number of incidents in which Jewish students were either insulted or intimidated on campus has increased.

Some three years ago Arab groups and organizations tried to persuade universities in Europe to boycott both Jewish and Israeli scientists. The University of Paris VII in France was one such example where the anti-Semitic groups partially succeeded in promoting anti-Semitic feelings.

Geneva is an important center for those people who mean to bias information about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because it houses most of the international organizations, if not all.

The pro-Palestinian movement in Geneva goes beyond its universities. It is even felt in the city's streets where people of Arab origins sell gadgets, embroideries and poetry belonging to Palestinians, as the vendors behind the booth tell the passers-by.

A big Palestinian flag is seen in every political demonstration in Geneva's streets, regardless of the issue.

What I am trying to say is that the Arabs do everything to occupy the ground, to be seen in every traditional market and every parade in Geneva, and a lot of people perceive them as victims of the evil military occupant called Israel.

People's opinion in Geneva is very important because it can influence people working for major international organizations like the UN and the International Red Cross.

Finally I leave you with the news that recently some Jewish French students at the University of Geneva, who are a on one-year exchange program from Paris, had to abandon the program because they had too much trouble from Arab students.

The situation is very, very bad in France and it is rapidly worsening in the French parts of Switzerland.
