She will keep doing it as long as she can. The problem is once she starts to lose customers who switch to the alternative of doing it themselves or of course outsourcing it to illegal aliens. Once that happens she'll learn or remember the lesson its always easier to keep a customer versus finding a new one. Of course its usually too late by then. There are many fundamental reasons why this time is different from the 70's.

It has nothing to do with utility costs. That's just her disguise. It sounds better than "I'm raising my prices because I am greedy and know that you'll pay more". Right I wonder what kind of car she drives, the size of her house, wether she gave up red lobster or not and wether she buys at macy's or salvation army - there are LOTS of places she still could have cut before passing it on to customers. Free dvd's at the library instead of 100 dollar dinner and movie on friday night - mcdonalds 1 dollar hamburger instead of martini and steak for 40 bucks - washing her own clothes instead of taking everything to the china man dry cleaner down the street - weekend playing latest deathmatch game online with chen instead of 5K weekend trip to fiji - letting car get dirty instead of 100 dollar weekly washing by custom detail shop etc etc it goes on and on
