Intel will not be a performance threat to AMD until they come up with a way to interconnect CPUs without going offchip to a memory controller.

The "Osbourne Effect" is where a company previews a new product coming out sometime in the future, but the preview hurts current sales because customers now want to wait for that new product.

Thanks. This guy seems to be well known at least in the tech world. I am surprised I hadn't heard of him previously.

Intel is being very open with regards to Conroe's performance and how it will turn the tables on the Intel-AMD competition. This is unusual for Intel, since they're usually pretty vague on exactly how much better their upcoming products will be. My opinion is that Intel is doing this on purpose, taking a little pain now for higher returns in the future. If it means people will put off purchasing either Intel or AMD now, so much the better as long as they end up with Intel Inside later.

All I can say is that's not the impression those who follow tech stocks are getting.....not to say that your take is wrong. It seems no one trusts what any one says when it comes to tech companies.

This is the first quarter that I've owned tech stocks in any great quantity since 2002 and I forgot how it was. I just got done listening to the MSPD CC. The level of antagonism between mgmt. and the tech analysts on Q & A was as surprising as it was frustrating. After a while, its difficult to discern whether mgmt. is lying, or the analysts are asking inappropriate questions. To get any sense of what was being said, I kept an AH quotation going to watch the movement of the stock while the players duked it out.

While some of that exists with non tech stocks, its much more muted and there is not this cat and mouse game being played out. So to go back to your original premise, INTC may well have an incredible gameplan in play where they will swoop down on AMD by Q3 and knock them senseless. However, the catty takeaway by analysts at this point is that AMD has INTC running with its tail tucked safely between its legs. Who knows where the truth really lies.
