The key is to not carry a balance.

I haven't carried a balance on my Visa for more years than I can recall. The only other credit card I have is Sears, which I use maybe twice a year, just to keep it active, and pay it off when the bill comes.

Another credit killer is having too many credit cards, even if you keep them current. When a lender looks at you for a loan, one thing they consider is the amount of debt you "could" get into with too much credit.
