Now that's dangerously like common sense! I have been looking for some sort of retirement magic bullet, recently. Perhaps the answer is that there isn't one, and that we just have to go on living and do our best in an uncertain world.

So far as investing in the patch is concerned, the big things on our side are time (= depletion, mostly) and the energy intensive and rather rigid nature of modern civilization. It also helps that much of modern portfolio theory is bullshit, and that choices between stocks still do matter.
