If the iranians bite off more than they can chew in iraq, and in a sense become the new occupiers, the old arab/persian tensions will heat up again and the US can sit on the sidelines and watch iranian imperialism fall apart. A united iraq is in everyones interest in the region with the exception of al quaeda who would love to see the US and or Iran suffer. The president of iran stands in the way, even of some mullahs who might want normalization with the US and even in the Israel/Pal conflict. Perhaps a bullet in the right place would solve all our problems. Maybe Tony Soprano could do what he did last night and import a couple of pros into Tehran. They could ask the iranian pres for directions like they did Rusty (frankie vallie).

Four years into the “war on terror,” the Bush administration has begun promoting a new formulation: “the long war.” Not a reassuring name. In a short war, put your money on tanks and bombs—our strengths. In a long war, the better bet is will and manpower—their strengths, and our great weakness. Even a loser can win when he’s up against a defeatist. A big chunk of Western civilization, consciously or otherwise, has given the impression that it’s dying to surrender to somebody, anybody. Reasonably enough, Islam figures: Hey, why not us? If you add to the advantages of will and manpower a nuclear capability, the odds shift dramatically.
