Geez, Rock. I'm scared to think what the true cost of things are. Our society would change overnight if we could know (and believe) that.

Speaking of technology, I've been contemplating an extended warranty on the Prius, at the same time I've been contemplating replacing the battery pack in a few years with a higher-density, aftermarket Li-ion solution. My technophilia will probably win out. :)

To put things into perspective....XOM grossed $59B last year.
Of that amount $23.3B was ceded to the government as taxes
and XOM had a net income of $36.1B, which means that we
consumers/taxpayers payed about 40% federal taxes for
oil/fuel. So indirectly we ARE paying for military protection which is priced into the cost of oil.
