The oil companies are their own worst enemies. They should explain that the price of gas is set the same way as the price of a share of publicly traded stock. By the market. If you own Microsoft and the stock jumps 20%, nobody expects you to sell it below that. You would just be giving the profit to someone else.

The per gallon tax remains the same for both the states and fed. OTOH, the state sales tax is 3 times higher on a $3 gallon than it is on a $1 gallon.
