My calculations show that the Prius is one of the only hybrids that actually saves money in the long run, and that is especially true with gasoline around $2.90/gallon. It's just a matter of getting the technology out there in the market. Further innovations will come along. Plug-in hybrids will definitely save money as they are much cheaper to operate, especially if we're looking at $5.00/gallon gas in coming years. Battery technology is slow to improve, but if there is real demand for improvement then other technologies like nanotechnology can be employed to bring down the cost of batteries and improve their ranges.
