NY Transit Union Chief Reports To Jail For Illegal Strike

(slap that donkey - HAHA)

NEW YORK (AP)--Roger Toussaint went to jail Monday to begin serving a 10-day sentence for leading last year's transit strike, entering a Manhattan lockup after marching across the Brooklyn Bridge alongside a raucous group of supporters who hailed him as a hero to working-class Americans.

Toussaint was walked to the door of the jail by the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Herbert Daughtry around 7 p.m. EST.

"I stand here today because a judge has found me guilty of contempt of court," Toussaint said outside the jail. "The truth of the matter is that I have nothing but contempt for a system that gives employers a free rein to abuse workers."

Before entering jail, Toussaint said a little sleep and a break from his cell phone might not be "quite so bad."

He earlier told a boisterous rally that he will "do 30 years before transit workers surrender. Working people have tried to obey the law and we have gotten nothing but insults for it."

The three-day strike, which paralyzed New York City in the middle of the Christmas rush, violated a state law banning strikes by public employees. A judge ruled that Toussaint should be jailed for 10 days for leading the strike.
