It's not unprecedented. SI's chief SUNW cheerleader during the bubble was not Charles Tutt but rather JC Jaros, who went from 100 posts a day (half on this board and half harrassing MSFT) to zero overnight. In JC's case, smart and funny guy though he was, the real world just got too out of sync with his personal mythology for him to be comfortable showing his face in what was at that time (and largely remains) a shouting match among ideologues rather than an orderly discussion.

I think he later privately communicated with Charles at least once though.
