"the government
must protect the long term interests of the general public or
else the needs of a modern society cannot progress or improve"

So who in "the government" decides what are the long term interests? needs of modern society? what if you think the "government" is going the wrong way? What if it means a nuke plant in your back yard? You wouldnt fight it? those enviromnent loonys are playing by the rules (not that im for the loonies)that the "government" set up. So you complain about the handcuffs yet you advise that the people that decided on the current hancuff rules should decide on new handcuff rules. Did "they" get smarter all of a sudden?

Sorry "the government " has no idea about long term anything or any insight to what modern people need and more then one individual has.

let it all play out uncontrolled. Eventually the people will decide with their wallets whats worth paying for and what should be sacrificed. Nukes will come back under the right scenario, solar will become more effecint eventually, geo will work if there is profit in it. What we do "indivdually together " should determine the direction of energy.

"Caly, consumers will buy what they can afford"

Too bad they don't just buy what they need and not what they can afford.
